Snopes is not a website that I’ve used in the past and
sadly, I hadn’t even heard of it until today.
It seemed very interesting to me and I spent quite some time on the
website as I am very inquisitive and am always trying to find out the “truth”
based on facts. I guess that’s the Human
Resource in me. Something that I liked
about Snopes is that they present the facts and mark it a green check mark if
they’ve researched the information and it’s factual and if the information/rumor
checks out to be fake, then it’s marked with a red “X”. Now if the information/rumor is partially
correct, then they have the marked area half green and half red which tells you
“only half of this is true’’. My
personal opinion is that everyone has a bias.
They say that the news is “unbiased” and that they don’t present their
opinions, they just present the “facts” but if that’s the case, why is CNBC
known for their liberal views? And why
is FoxNews known for their conservative views?
It’s because no matter what, you’re stating facts with a covert spin
(and sometimes not so covert). While I didn’t
notice a direct bias on a specific topic on Snopes, I am certain that they
exsist. I will certainly continue to
visit the Snopes website in the future as I see it provides information on an
array of topics from Business, College, Crime, Travel and heck … even love!
It is a pretty cool site. I also could not find obvious biased posts but I believe that it is okay to support either party as long as the person providing the info doesn't project their beliefs when relaying the material. They do post a bunch of things that I see on Facebook and go as far as I wish I had time to investigate them. The one with the Helium and wine, for example! I guess that's my frustrated investigative self talking now. :O)
ReplyDeleteI also didn't know anything about this site before today and found it beneficial in that they inform you before having to read the entire story whether it is true or false, making it very easy to find a rumored subject and know if it is accurate or not. I did find some of the stories to be quite irrelevant and distasteful but others' were about current events in the world which I do think can be beneficial. I also did not find any biases about the creators but I too did not know this existed until today and have no previous knowledge concerning the creators. I do think this will be a site that will aid me in the future to debunk rumors I have heard on the internet therefore making the site relevant.
